Is having a metal detector weird for a 15 year old boy

hi I am a boy that's 15 years old and for a couple weeks I have been chopping and changing my mind on what I should spend my birthday money on and I really want a metal detector and want to buy it online as it is way cheaper , my parents both think that its strange and not the norm for a 14 year old to have one and they say things like " all my 20 years I have never seen a boy walking with a metal detector ' and my mom just keeps laughing at me because she thinks its that strange and my parents wont let me buy it , how do I talk to them is it really that strange ? and I have always been fascinated by archeology and the thrill of finding things that are unexpected , my dad also just says that I impulsive and crazy
