Why do animal shelters kill animals?

Because some areas don't have enough space for all the animals they capture do they have to kill them if they stay unadopted for a while.

They think of it as a way to cut costs while giving the animals a chance at life. hey will keep said animals for a while, but if the animals don't get adopted, they put them down. It is to save money from having to pay people to take care of hem, feed them, etc. Also as previously pointed out, there is the space aspect as well. Animals that are less likely to get adopted are usually put down to provide space for the ones coming in that will more likely to get adopted.
