Either animals are mere mechanism or they feel pain. If either animals feel pain or they have souls,

Translate the argument into symbolic form and use the rules of inference to derive the conclusion.
Either animals are mere mechanism or they feel pain. If either animals feel pain or they have souls, then they have a right not to be subjected to needless pain and human have duty not to inflict needless pain on them. It is not the case that animals are mere mechanisms. Therefore, animals have a right not to be subjected to needless pain.

Animals are not mere mechanisms....animals feel physical pain as acutely as we do...but they also feel emotional pain. Seems to me they probably feel emotion even more deeply than humans....we have this intellect we can escape to and that can interfere with or dampen our emotions. Only one of the reasons its so heartbreaking to know how badly animals have been treated by our species now and in the past.
