It is not the case that animals are mere mechanisms. Therefore, animals have a right not to be subjected to needless pain.

Animals are not mere mechanisms....animals feel physical pain as acutely as we do...but they also feel emotional pain. Seems to me they probably feel emotion even more deeply than humans....we have this intellect we can escape to and that can interfere with or dampen our emotions. Only one of the reasons its so heartbreaking to know how badly animals have been treated by our species now and in the past.
