Can you use a candle and a bit of glass to view the forthcoming eclipse?

As a kid, I remember my dad getting a candle and coating a piece of glass with the black fumes until it created a really thick layer which we then used to view the eclipse with. I have no idea as to the safety of this so was wondering what you think?
