How to tell the difference between male and female hdmi cables/sockets?

I have a Panasonic Viera wall mounted in my home, and I cannot access the HDMI sockets round the side of it. I have asked within electronic stores, because there is a side socket that is accessible, and they said it may be a female HDMI socket and I would need an adapter, so I want to make sure it is.
