Kind of, XHTML infers a standard way of laying out your html.

It was implemented as part of html 4 and is declared as part of the document type definition enabling browsers to determine how a site should be displayed.

however with HTML 5 this is no longer the case browsers will interpret the site as html unless you specify other wise
