Platelet units cannot be stored at 4 degree Celsius in a refrigerator because they lose their function .They are stored at 22-24 degree Celsius as PCs which is a methodology that significantly improved their availability. They are permeable to oxygen in order to promote aerobic metabolism. This prevents pH drop and their shelf life stops the fifth day of storage due to the risk of bacterial and virtual contamination and occurs of structural lesions.
