My father saying no to my studying abroad dream?

I REALLY want to study abroad and am determined beyond belief! My only obstacle is my father. I've brought up the idea a few time and even had a major discussion, although it was for me and not to him. He says that losing me for a year out weighs the rest and I can see his reasoning but! It's my dream to study abroad in Japan and I can't live that down, no way! I've honestly never been motivated about much but this is different. He shuts down the idea as soon as mentioned, no debate. How should I persuade him to let me go, after all it's only one year of many. My current idea is to later, months later, show him my determination, my views, thoughts, and growth. I fear that won't work either… any advice?
