Help With Chemical Reactions?

During science, my partner and I mixed 3 tablespoons of phenol red solution with 3 teaspoons of calcium chloride. The temperature went way up. Then, we mixed 3 TEASPOONS of phenol red with 3 teaspoons of calcium chloride. The temperature still went way up, but it came down much faster. Can anyone explain why that is? In depth? Fast?
