Can my landlord come after me for money after I have moved out?

My old landlord just sent me a text message today stating he was charging me a $200 pet deposit which he was also charging to everyone else who previously lived there at the same time. He also stated that if not paid by the 15th (10 days from now) it would go to collections. I have been moved out for at least 3 weeks and never signed any type of lease while I lived there. (i live in iowa)
