Until the Mycenaeans fell, Greece was largely unified. However, when Mycenae collapsed, Greece became compartmentalized and the polis was established. Because Greece was so fragmented, there was no one set religion or interpretation of it. Greek mythology resulted in contradictions, so many, that religion took a backseat to art and literature.
