How hCG sticks to antibodies

How is hCG able to stick to monoclonal antibodies to detect pregnancy? The reason I ask is because I don't understand why an antibody would stick to a hormone? I thought that antibodies that surround a cell would identify it to be destroyed by phagocytosis. So there's no logic for an antibody to attach to hCG.
