I'm not a big fan of caging animals but without the caged option, dogs and cats are about your only choice. There are dog breeds that are very small. Some even smaller than a grown cat.

In caged animals there are many choices. We had a hooded rat (photo at the link below) that a neighbor didn't want any more that was a lot of fun. She was sweet for the kids to play with and clean compared to hamsters. Most small caged animals don't live but a few years though and it becomes a traumatic event for everybody when they die.

Don't rule out the birds. Parrots often live 50-60 years and are great conversationalists. :-)

You should get a dachshund. They are so cute. When your feeling sad they cheer you right up. I have one. I recommend them (:

You can have the kind of pets you want. Whether a dog or cat or anything else. The most important thing is to take care of the pets and provide them all the facilities properly.
