Web Sites servers?

A client is in the business of building web sites for customers with potentially high traffic sites. They have requested that you provide a proposal for a recommended architecture. Their requirements are:

● The machines are to run in the Amazon cloud.
● The solution must be highly available, making use of load balancing, replication, and caching where possible.
● The software stack must include Apache, PHP, MySQL, and Drupal.
● There must be a staging environment, but it does not need to be highly available.
● It is necessary to monitor the systems, including graphing of performance data. This too does not need to be highly available.

Please provide answers to the following:

1 What Linux distribution and version would you recommend, and why?
2 What do you recommend for load balancing, replication, and caching? Why?
3 How many instances (approximate) would be necessary to satisfy the client's requirements? Note any assumptions you have made.
4 What monitoring solution would you recommend and what components would you monitor/graph?
