Nerve impulses & body homeostasis?

This might be an odd question, but I recently came across the brain in a vat argument, so I was wondering if it could ever be possible for machinery to maintain the body's homeostasis?

The other thing I was wondering about is how exactly do the nerves determine the position of body parts? If the nerve connected to the hand was shortened & connected to the arm instead, would electrochemical impulses automatically tell the brain the source of origin for the electrochemical impulses has been shortened? If not, would brain assume that the sensation is felt in the hands even though the nerve is now ending in the arm? Finally, do sensory neurons regenerate if damaged or removed?

First of all the balance of human body is maintaned by a very complex process and its process not only processed by our brain.the work is also done by our entire musculoskeletal system,the vestibular apparatus in our ear,the eye movements,the cranial nerves and thier nucleuses present in our brain stem,cerebellum.any problem in one can affect the balance of person.
Now about the nerves,the impulses like pain,temperature all this sensations are passed through the neurons(remember that a bunch of neurons will form a nerve),which enter into the spinal cord and from there it ascends to the sensory cortex in our when some lesion occur in this nerve or degeneration occur the sensation from that area gets affected and there will lose of function based on site as u said wat happens wen a nerve is shortened and is some how connected to the arm by a neurosurgeon, the brain gets impulses from that new area.
regeneration of nervous tissue is very slow process and thats the reason why we cant completely treat alziemers or parkinsons.
