I would not advise a 17 year old to travel alone. Even with a traveling partner you should stay off the back streets and spend your time in public, crowded areas. Not just in Thailand and Malaysia, but throughout the world there are some very mean people willing to prey on young people.

Don't get involved in any kind of money transactions in the street.

I think there is no problem with a 17 yr old to travel alone, as long as, you are independent enough and able to manage circumstances by yourself. Just enjoy and be alert and sensitive enough of bad persons. Try to plan your trip ahead to be able to minimize problems along the way. I suggest you use this for planning a trip: http://www.voyajo.com
