Whether the oven is electric or gas isn't the issue, it's the distribution of the heat. If you preheat the oven to 350 degrees then insert the cake in the center of the oven for 20 minutes, that should work. But before you take it out, insert a long toothpick in the center. If it comes out with goo on it, it isn't finished. If it comes out clean, it is.
