Data Usage

I just got my first phone and my brother just received an email saying that I'm almost past my data usage limit. The problem is I don't understand what data usage is and how to limit what I do on my phone. I've tried searching on Google, but the answers are very confusing. Should I delete some games? This is all very new to me. I don't have a lot of games. I usually just text, watch clips on youtube and play five games. What is causing this? Thanks for all your help. By the way, I have an Iphone 5. One last thing, I also use shopkick.

Youtube is more than likely the cause of it. Streaming videos can really suck up your data usage.
