Why was it important to include a statement of national identity in the Declaration of Independence?

Asked Jun 23, 2012
Prior to the Declaration of Independence, America was a colony and subservient to the British throne. The Declaration was a political statement that essentially identified the country as a nation under it's own sovereign power.
