I bought a sims pc game at a thrift store and the product key doesnt work

I BOUGHT A SIMS PC GAME AT A THRIFT STORE AND THE PRODUCT KEY DOESNT WORK. DO I NEED ANOTHER PRODUCT KEY? How can I get another product key without buying a new game?
