Leverage is the use of a technique that will apply more force to a situation than would be available otherwise. Example: You have a child that finds you embarrassing and doesn't want to be seen with you when around his friends. That provides you with an opportunity for leverage.

He misbehaves in school so, to control his behavior, you threaten to come to his class and explain that he is misbehaving for attention and then give him a hug and a kiss in front of all of his friends. You are using his embarrassment as leverage to control his behavior.
