In a legal sense, it depends on how the law is enforced where it's done. In terms of being a good parent, discipline by hitting a child anywhere on their body does not work and only teaches them how NOT to act when they are frustrated.

I'd say that 99.99% of the time, slapping a child in the face is child abuse. I suppose if the kid was about to eat something poisonous or harmful and slapping him/her was the only way to keep him/her safe, then I could let that slide. I don't think slapping a kid in the face is effective or moral discipline.

yes, this is definite child abuse in the eyes of many parents along with the Social Services..............I would report this if I saw this take place. This is not the way to handle any situation................you wouldn't like to be slapped would you?

Whereas I don't condone it, as a mental health professional, I know that legally it is only child abuse if the slap leaves a mark on the child's face. This has been supported by many legal decisions.
