You can remove old paint and varnish in a couple of different ways, primarily by sanding and by the use of chemical strippers.Sanding is a good method only if you have good sanding equipment and are experienced in the use of such equipment.

While refinishing particularly door furniture or other make sure to check the hardware fittings, cup handles knobs, rim locks & latches, finger plates, knockers, bell pulls, escutcheons and coat hooks if any installed in your furniture are tight & tough enough. Actually did one refinish for my doors hence giving you the details accordingly, hope this will be of a good use to you. All the very best!!!!

Being custom furniture expert as diamond-office.co.uk, I tried this thing so many time in my life for antique

Make sure that you are not removing the patina from an expensive antique
Understand instructions on all labels of the chemicals which you are going to use
Don’t remove any stripper until you can rub with one finger (without scraping) down to bare wood
Etc.

To refinish furniture I would like to share some basic steps:
• Use aerosol spray the stripper evenly over the surface and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. You’ll see the old finish start to lift up off the wood.
• After that removing the old finish you have to apply stripper and scrape more than once in order to remove the majority of the old finish.
• Wipe with mineral spirits using a clean cloth to remove any residual stripper.
• To remove the last bits of finish, you should use a palm sander with medium-grit sandpaper until you see the bare wood.
• Wipe down the whole surface with a tack cloth to remove any dust from sanding.
• Apply an oil-based clear coat for a final layer of sheen and protection.

Refinishing old or antique wooden furniture is a popular hobby and has been growing in interest over the past several years. It’s a creative and rewarding project that can provide you with eclectic and high-quality pieces for your home or office space. Before getting started on your wooden furniture restoration or refinishing project, it’s important to get all of your supplies in order so you can complete your project more efficiently.

Many furniture refinishing and revitalizing enthusiasts and experts are against refinishing wooden furniture for fear that it will reduce the piece’s monetary value. However, the other camp of furniture restoration hobbyists and pros will argue that refinishing furniture extends the piece’s longevity. They feel that if your purpose isn’t to obtain a monetary return on your investment in the piece, then restoring and refinishing a piece allows you to get more use out of it long-term.
