In my opinion, Macs are the very best.
I used PCs -- even for design work -- until 5-6 years ago when I used a Mac for the first time... and I was hooked. I will never go back to PCs. I prefer the operating software, the design of the user interface, the feel of the keyboard, the sleekness of the case, the display, the customer service, the Genius Bar, etc. The only thing I hate about Mac and miss with PCs is the ease of maximizing a window without having to install apps or hold the shift key.
Macs are awesome out of the box, but you can mod them into just crazy, ridiculous machines.
I love my new 15" MacBook Pro. (It's too hard to find nice handbags that accommodate the 17" and I don't like carrying a separate laptop bag.) It has a 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, and an antiglare hi-res widescreen display. One of the guys in our IT department made some awesome upgrades to it. He upgraded the hard drive to 1T. I never use the optical drive (I got an external one for rare occasion when I do need it), so he took that out and put in a second 1T hard drive. He upgraded the memory to 16GB. He got me a stylus and installed software so the trackpad can act as a graphic tablet. When I'm at my desk, I sit it on a Rain Design mStand and use a Magic Keyboard and Trackpad. I've got a Matrox TripleHead2Go to connect to three monitors, so I've four displays at the desk. The only thing that's missing is I really, really want my screen to be touchable.
My computer probably cost $5000 after all the mods, which most people would never pay... I wouldn't either... but I work in graphics and the business paid for it and it's a deduction. The new MacBook Air starts at $1000 and you can find cheaper Macs in the refurbished section of the website. If you can swing it, I really think they're worth the investment.
