Are there any negative effect of water on plants?

Absolutely. Water requirements vary from species to species. Overwatering can kill a plant, or severely damage the root system by rotting it or encouraging fungus, mold, etc.... Plus, remember Hurricane Katrina? That did a number on the ecosystem as well.
