Technological Information systems can be developed by businesses with the intent of selling them to organizations that have a need for assembling and maintaining data or they can be developed within the organization to support the objectives of the endeavor. Systems developed in-house are normally task-specific and systems developed for sale are general purpose systems that the user adapts to their task.

Users of information technology can be one computer operations as a small store would keep inventory records, a local area network for a mid-sized business with many computers or world-wide across the Internet like an airline might require.

Some systems are used to distribute information such as a web site while others contain data that is manipulated by computer algorithms like market trading systems.

Anywhere records are kept you will likely find an information system of some kind in use.
