Africa's capital markets have improved considerably in the past ten years but still fall far short of the great potential the continent offers. Market activity increased even with the recession at the end of the decade. Investors with an appetite for high risk go to frontier markets because higher risk brings greater rewards. Rather than a very modest improvement in the markets, there would have been a landslide capital infusion into Africa if not for the political instability of the past decade. The possibility of political upheaval expropriating their investments is more risk than many investors are willing to take.

Markets that are viewed as stable and honest will fund new industry and allow Africans to benefit from their many natural resources. The result would provide a tax base that would help African nations deal with their many social problems. However, in the past ten years, greedy politicians and zealous religious leaders have continued the suppression of the African economies by making it a place where few investors are willing to put their money.
