If you turn the water off before going on vacation, should you also turn the hot water heater off?

Usually if you turn the Hot water system off in your electricity box - that in itself turns off the power to the water heater.

that's if it is electric !

The reason why you turn your water off when you go away for an extended period of time, is to prevent a pipe from bursting and gushing the entire time you are gone. This is an especially good idea if your house is located in a cold climate, where your pipes may freeze and burst. The pipes on your Hot water heater should be hot and not likely to burst from being frozen.
