Is Rebel capitalized when synomyous for Confederate in Civil War history?

Yes. You're using the word "rebel" as a name for the rebel forces, so they are the Rebels. The Rebels (note the capitalization) fought in the Civil War. The teens were such rebels (again, capitalization). When it's used as a name, it gets capitalized.
