New York City was originally selected selected as the host city, but that was contingent on the completion of the proposed West Side stadium for the New York Jets. That stadium was scheduled to be completed by 2008. But when the plans for that stadium fell through due to the New York legislature declining to fund $300 million of the cost, the NFL reopened the bidding. The final three cities were Miami, Atlanta, and Houston, which were the runners-up for Super Bowl XLIII. On October 6, 2008, Miami was selected as the new site for Super Bowl XLIV.
