What is the proper sequence to install a new anti-virus program?

The subscription to my AVG antivirus program is about to run out and I want to try a different anti-virus program, what is the proper sequence to install a new anti-virus program. For example: do I install the new anti-virus first and then remove the old anti-virus?

I used to love AVG, but it's gotten to bulky now a days, so I use Avast. You should uninstall AVG first and then install Avast.

Yeah, Kapersky works well too. Just stay away from Norton. I know people who work for Norton who wouldn't be caught dead with it on their own computers.
