My first time was okay. It hurt for me. Oni_kami, my husband took things slow but still ended up hurting me. We used lube, and foreplay. I have a very tight cervix and even using tampons hurt me. The first time for me, didn't hurt, it was very pleasurable. When the vagina is aroused, it expands. So my advice for your first time would be lots of foreplay and a little lube never hurt. :)
