How do I stretch shoes without a shoe tree?

I cannot get my shoes on since they have a higher instep and they are the right size so how do I stretch them a bit without having a shoe tree?

Fill a sandwich bag with some water, enough water to allow the bag to be inserted tight inside the shoe.
Freeze it, until the water turns to ice. Thaw it for 20 minutes and then remove
the bags(s). Repeat as necessary. It works with most materials.
