Compare/contrast the following two definitions of marriage. In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each definition? Consider what arrangements these definitions allow for and provide examples. In your opinion, which definition more accurately applies to marriage in the United States? Do you think marriages, as a way people organize themselves to meet their basic needs, will continue to be relevant in the United States? Why or why not?

Definition 1: “The socially approved union of two people” (Spradley and McCurdy)

Definition 2: “A union between two people (usually), who are likely to be, but are not necessarily, co-resident, sexually involved with each other, and procreative” (Miller)
