Can I gain fat from eating too much protein?

If protein is a building block for muscle, then you will never gain fat from overeating protein, right?

High-protein diets may promise weight loss, but it may only be short term. Excess protein is usually stored as fat while the surplus of amino acids is excreted. This can lead to weight gain over time, especially if you consume too many calories while trying to increase your protein intake.

Protein breaks down slowly as compared to carbs, you feel full for a long time. Eating protein that much needed, helps to lose less muscle. But in case of eating too much protein that is more than 20 percent, especially animal protein is more likely to gain fat 10 percent more than of the body weight as compared to protein less than 15 percent.
