Need help with styling stubborn Asian hair?

I am an Asian male with a ovalish face and really stubborn hair. My hair tends to collect itself together when it is wet. It gets poofy on the sides when it's shorter. I'm guessing my hair is what you call thin - considering it isn't very dense. I currently have medium length hair on the top and short, poofy hair on the side. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I have a normal hairline? In a nutshell, I dislike the current state of my hair.

I have been looking at ways I can style my hair and I really like the look of the side swept style with possible short sides. I was wondering with the given description of my hair, could I rock it? If not, please feel free to leave suggestions on what I should do. (If you need more details please let me know)

Side Note: I would appreciate it so much if I could get as many opinions and advice as possible.
