Need advice on setting mouse traps!

A mouse got into our house somehow. I bought mouse guard & victor spring mouse traps. I set them with peanut butter the last 4 nights & each morning the peanut butter is gone & only 1 trap even went off. I've watched several YouTube videos & see that the arm has to barely be in, but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I have no experience with this kind of problem & I just want the mouse out of my house! Can someone tell me what I might be doing wrong in setting it to activate and how to get it right?
