What's included at the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

The inca trail is the pre colombian road which brings you directly to the sun gate of machu pichu. In other words it's how the inca used to arrive. It is an important monument in its own right and such is its popularity as a walking route, it was being damaged by over use. To protect it the peruvian government made it permit only, typically those permits are purchased by a tour company in your name and passport number. They are non transferable.
How the tour company package the permit and the tour varies. A good tour should include 2 days acclimatisation in Cuzco. The train to the start of the inca trail, porters for your main bag, sufficient guides for your group. (who will need to be tipped at the end). Provide you with tents which will be set up the porters, who will also provide meals. It takes 4 days 3 nights to walk the inca trail. It can be walked by anyone of decent fitness, although some fail to make it because of altitude sickness. I have also been told a good head for heights is necessary. One of the advantages of the inca trail option is you get to machu pichu before the train. So you see it less crowded.
I would recommend
Tucan travel
G adventures (there website has great info on the inca trail www.gadventures.com/travel-styles/active/hiking-trekking/)
Alpaca Expeditions http://alpacaexpeditions.com/
Intrepid travel
All have good tours.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu provides an unforgettable experience showcasing the ancient Inca way of life. The trail winds through protected natural areas from the Andes to the wild Peruvian rainforest, passing by several archaeological sites and offering impressive views of the snow carpets of the Andes. I am going for an adventures trip to Peru on coming vacation with "Green Peru Adventures" and they are providing me lots of opportunities for my trip.
