Do 3rd gamecube adapters burn out your wii u's usb ports?

As I was talking to my older cousin about not being able to find a gamecube adapter I states my interest in a 3rd party adapter. he responded that I should not buy one as they render the usb ports unusable. I can find no evidence of this online. but I would still like to check before buying one. Thank you
