T-mobile changed and renewed without informing me? Please help!

Hi, I took out a contract with t-mobile in the late 1998 for £12.99 a month it add features like free call's to all landlines and other t-mobile users I also got a phone with the contract, in 2006 t-mobile tried to buy these contracts back from there costumers but I refused contract went up to £16.15 a month. I stopped using the sim card in 2008 but have been paying for it still to this day by direct debit from my bank. today I called to ask them to send me out a new sim card and ask about a phone upgrade and they told me that even thou I haven't used the phone for over 6 years and have billed me for over £1200 I was not entitled to a phone upgrade. they then went on to tell me that all the main features had been taken away in 2007 when I asked them to explain they said my 12month contract had ended and that the contract had changed, I then said so you are telling me that u renewed my contract, billed me for six years without informing or asking me once. I didn't agree to renew and I didn't agree to any new contract apart from the first one. how can this happen and is it right? please help me!!
