Is it considered Extra, if it's in addition to the variable 0.

I had a debate with a friend stating that if you have 0 of any item and you add something to it, it can't be considered extra because it's the only one of it's variable. The friend states that even if I started with 0, it's still extra because its in addition to 0. Who's correct?
