Can my friends enroll her 16 yr old nephew into high school?

Well my friend needs help. She's not the legal guardian of the child, but she is his aunt. Will the school let her enroll her nephew without being the legal guardian? Her nephew's mom is in jail. So, she's taking care of the child for her sister. Is there any possible way she can enroll him?
