Why were Russia booed at the 2014 Eurovision semi-finals?

I know it's something to do with the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine, but was there a specific reason? Were there more pro-Ukrainians in the crowd that night or something?

There is no ethnic conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, this is about politics. West Ukraine with US and NATO, East Ukraine with Russia. So, cause Eurovision is western event, western media and countries pushing to Russia and East Ukraine with sanctions and media blaming. Shame on ignorant people for involving politics to Eurovision and booing Russian kids, Austrian boy-girl artist or other competitors because politics or homophobia.

Thanks. I have a better understanding now. Can I just say I completely share your views about the booing. The twins are only seventeen and it really doesn't seem fair to make them feel like they've done something wrong because of some absent-minded *word I shouldn't use on the Internet* who think that political crap matters.
