What is the importance of identifying genes responsible for antifungal drug resistance?

I am wondering about the big picture of the importance to identifying which genes (in fungi that commonly cause infections in humans) cause resistance to antifungal drugs. I know that at the large scale level it is beneficial to know the function of various genes, but I am wondering about how it could effect drug development and treatment options.
