What causes panic attacks in young adults?

Yesterday and today I have experienced panic attacks. I just turned 23 years old, and I'm wondering if it's ok, or I should see a doctor. I wasnt in any situation to be "panicked" they sort of just come at random. Yesterday at the gym I was lifting weights and my heart started beating out of control for no apparent reason. I am female, in shape, work out frequently. My family has a history of heart problems is why I'm concerned. Also, I switched to drinking dark roast coffee, instead of regular blend. Could this be a factor?
