What do I look for when shopping for preppy clothes?

I'm 18 years old and I've just recently taken an interest in the "preppy" lifestyle. I want a completely new look and I love the classiness of this look. I'm going on vacation in May and I really want to showcase this style! The only problem is that I have no clue what color combinations or patterns to look for. I also need outfit ideas! Please help!
