Ive inserted new sd card, but no differance

My smartphone came with a 2gb SD card and I could hardly get any apps because of the low storage. So I bought a 16gb SD card from Amazon for my phone. I took the old one out and inserted the new one. But it said that it had been inserted but I don't get any more storage space for games and apps etc. Its still only 2gb sspace storage on my phone! What shall I do? Why is this?
