What are parents and schools rights on doing background checks on parents

My friend is worried, she got a recorded call from her kids school saying they are going to start doing background checks, by scanning IDs for visitors and people picking up kids. She is worried because she thinks she has an open assault charge on her record. She got into a fight with an ex and never went to court over it. What are her rights in this? should she be worried?
