A farmer is shortly to sow two crops: sugar beet and turnips. His farm contains 500 hectares of arable land and the crops yield 10 and 15 tonnes per hectare respectively. He can only arrange transport for 7000 tonnes in total. His workforce can work a maximum of 4000 hours during the harvesting and growing seasons, when they spend on average 10 hours on each hectare of sugar beet and 5 hours on each hectare of turnips. The profit to the farmer is €4.20 per tonne of sugar beet and €3.60 per tonne of turnips. The farmer must decide how many hectares to plant with sugar beet and how many with turnips in order to achieve as large a profit as possible.
