Vehicle straw purchase and straw buyers

A few years back I was unable to purchase a vehicle for myself due to poor credit and lack of funds. My friend offered to help me purchase the vehicle in her name and make the payments for me. She was not the primary driver or even the secondary driver on the vehicle, I was the only driver. Was this illegal to do? I have read about straw purchases and straw buying as being considered lender fraud sine the lender was not aware this vehicle was for someone else's use and not the purchaser. Apparently you are not allowed to finance a vehicle for someone else to drive? Now buying it out right is another story which I know. Can someone shed some light. We reside in illinois
